Rite Aid Corporation Conducting Investigative & Remedial Activities at Former Clayton Store

A former Rite Aid store in Clayton is the subject of an environmental investigation and clean up. Operations conducted at the Site prior to Rite Aid’s occupancy included dry cleaning, a gasoline filling station, and a bulk oil distribution facility.

A former Rite Aid store in Clayton is the subject of an environmental investigation and clean up, according to a Legal Notice that was published on October 18, 2018.

The former Rite Aid store was located at 13-19 North Delsea Drive, Clayton, Gloucester County (Block 1212, Lot 14).

As per New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulations for “Notification and Public Outreach”, Rite Aid Corporation is providing information relating to environmental conditions and remedial activities being conducted at the above-referenced property (the “Site”), the Legal Notice states.

Operations conducted at the Site prior to Rite Aid’s occupancy included dry cleaning, a gasoline filling station, and a bulk oil distribution facility.

Chemicals associated with former Site operations include, but may not be limited to, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, cis-1,2-dichloroethene, cyclohexane, and lead, and were initially detected in the soil and ground water in 2003.

Since this time, Rite Aid Corporation has determined that the contamination in the ground water and saturated soil has migrated from the Site, and Rite Aid will continue to characterize and monitor ground water and soil impacts, and conduct additional remedial action for Site soil, vapor, and ground water, as needed.

Rite Aid Corporation is currently conducting investigative and remedial activities in accordance with the requirements of the NJDEP to address the chemical contaminants detected.

Rite Aid Corporation has evaluated the environmental impacts from the Site, including the potential for the contamination migrating from the Site to affect drinking water wells and the quality of indoor air in off-site structures.

Although Rite Aid’s investigation continues, based on Rite Aid’s already extensive off-site investigation, Rite Aid’s environmental consultants have concluded that no drinking water wells have been affected by the impacts, and a vapor intrusion assessment performed in accordance with NJDEP guidelines indicated that no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in soil-gas at concentrations above the residential or the non-residential Soil Gas Screening Levels (SGSLs).

In addition, Rite Aid’s environmental consultants have concluded that off-site soil impacts do not present a direct contact risk to human health or ecological receptors, the Legal Notice indicates.

For additional information or to obtain a copy of the complete fact sheet for the Site, please contact Rite Aid Corporation’s consultant, BL Companies, Inc., Mr. Kenneth Yoder at (717) 651-9850.
