To help draw attention to the public’s right to know, Sunshine Week is a national initiative with the goal of promoting a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information.

Participants include news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools, and others interested in the public’s right to know.

Sunshine Week is brought to you by the American Society of News Editors and Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press with generous support from John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Bloomberg, and The Gridiron Club and Foundation.

On its website, Sunshine Week.org states: “Sunshine Week lasts seven days, but it’s up to all of us to keep the sun shining on government all year.”

Launched in 2005, Sunshine Week has grown into an enduring annual initiative to promote open government and push back against excessive official secrecy.

In 2015, Sunshine Week celebrated 10 years of success in promoting greater government transparency, in both actual practice and in general awareness of its importance.

This week, the New Jersey Foundation for Open Government is holding a free educational seminar on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Belleville High School, 100 Passaic Ave, Belleville, N.J.

Panelists will be talking about New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act and Open Public Meetings Act and how you can exercise your rights under these laws to be better informed about the operations of state and local government. Handouts will be provided.
This event is free, but attendees are asked to register for a head count for the materials.

In our area, there are three meetings scheduled this week:

  • Monday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m., the Mt. Ephraim School Board will meet at Mary Bray School. Click here to view the meeting agenda.
