Gloucester City Man Receives 5-Year Prison Term for Role in Robbing Local Family Dollar

Kerwin L. Matthews, 53, of Gloucester City was sentenced to 5 years in N.J. state prison after pleading guilty to a second degree charge of robbing the Family Dollar on Gateway Boulevard in Westville in May, 2017.

Kerwin L. Matthews, 53, of Gloucester City was sentenced to five years in N.J. state prison after pleading guilty to a second degree charge of robbing the Family Dollar on Gateway Boulevard in Westville as the store was closing on May 28, 2017.

Matthews was accused of approaching a store employee at gunpoint and taking a lunch bag from her that was valued at $10.


Matthews was apprehended the same day. He has been in jail since his arrest.

Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker sentenced Matthews on September 22, 2017. Matthews reached a plea on August 3, 2017 as a result of negotiations with the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

Matthews’ co-defendant, Melanie Thomas, 33, also of Gloucester City, remains charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
