Gloucester City Man Receives 5 Year Prison Term for Attempting to Disarm Police Officer

James R. Dorton, 34, of Gloucester City N.J. was sentenced to five years in New Jersey state prison for his admitted attempt to disarm a Woodbury police officer in an October 10, 2016 struggle on Cooper Street in Woodbury.

On February 2, 2018, James R. Dorton, 34, of Gloucester City N.J. was sentenced to five years in New Jersey state prison for his admitted attempt to disarm a Woodbury police officer in an October 10, 2016 struggle on Cooper Street, according to a statement released by the Gloucester City Prosecutor’s office.

In the incident, city police officers were dispatched to a location outside the Atrium Acute Care Center for a report of a man attempting to steal an NJ Transit bus.

Dorton was identified as the suspect and attempted to flee. A struggle ensued when he was apprehended and he attempted to grab the service weapons of two officers.

When he was transported to Inspira Hospital, Dorton again struggled, kicked a patrol car door, and once more reached for the officers’ weapons.

Dorton entered a guilty plea on December 11, 2017 to the second-degree offense of attempting to disarm a police officer.

Under terms of the plea agreement, Assistant Gloucester County Prosecutor Steven Salvati recommended the five-year sentence.

Doron was sentenced before Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker in accordance with the agreement.
