Superman. A pirate. A mummer. A firefighter. These are just a few of the many masterpieces that were created during the recent “Stuff-A-Scarecrow” event hosted by Brooklawn Girl Scout Troop #30721.
Troop Leader Jen Groatman said this was the first time the troop held the event, but she hopes to make it a new tradition.

Groatman said: “We had 29 scarecrows that were made. Some businesses and community groups — such as the Two Street Stompers and Purses Full of Hope — along with many families came to support us.” she said.
Mayor Teri Branella, Councilman Patrick Moses, and Administrative Assistant/Event Planner, Todd Twichell, also came out to support the event.

Groatman came up with the idea when she was taking her daughters to dance class one fall. “We loved to check out the scarecrows in Woodbury along the way. It was always something we looked forward to. I wanted to create this for Brooklawn.”
She describes Brooklawn as “a small town with a big heart” that is “very family oriented and such a supporting community.”
Groatman figured this would be a way to make an affordable fundraiser to raise money for the troop to go camping in the fall.
The scouts participate in many service activities and love to give back to the community. “They tell me often how proud they feel. To me, that is the best experience we can give them as a Girl Scout,” Groatman said.
The scarecrows are now on display along New Broadway — thanks to Brooklawn Public Works.
